Raag Dhanashree is rendered in two flavors – Bhairavi Ang and Bheempalasi Ang. In both of these flavors, Rishabh and Dhaivat are Varjya in Aaroh and Avroh is Sampurna.
In Raag Dhanashree with Bhairavi Ang, Rishabh, Gandhar, Dhaivat and Nishad are Komal, whereas in Raag Dhanashree with Bheempalasi Ang (Thaat Kafi), only Gandhar and Nishad are Komal. But, Aaroh of Both types of Raag Dhanashree is the same – ,n S g m P n S’. But Avroh of Raag Dhanashree with Bhairavi Ang is – S’ n d P m P g m g r S , and Avroh of Raag Dhanashree with Bheempalasi Ang is – S’ n D P m P g m g R S.
Aaroh and Avroh of Raag Dhanashree with Bheempalasi Ang and Raag Bheempalasi are the same, difference being that of the Vadi Swar. Vadi Swar of Raag Dhanashree with Bheempalasi Ang is Pancham (with more P-g sangati) while that of Raag Bheempalasi is Madhyam. Evidently, these two Raagas are pretty similar and are very difficult to render apart.
Both the Flavors of Raag Dhanashree have Pancham and Shadj as Vadi and Samvadi respectively and have Pancham-Gandhar Sangati. But because of the difference in Komal notes, these two can be told apart.
The following combinations are illustrative of the Raag Dhanashree with Bhairavi Ang:
