Raag Sundarkauns is very impressive and rapidly effective. Replacing Komal Dhaivat of Raag Malkauns by Shuddha Dhaivat makes this beautiful Raag known as Sundarkauns.
Some musicians call this set of Notes (S g m D n S’ – S’ n D m g S) as Raag Chandrakauns with Bageshree Ang. But in Acharya Tanarang’s opinion it was a misnomer because neither this Raag has Shuddha Nishad indicating Chandrakauns nor this Raag has a Avroh like Bageshree (S’ n D m P D m g R S). Further more because of its misleading name (Raag Chandrakauns with Bageshree Ang) this Raag couldn’t gain much popularity and musicians hardly think of rendering it.
Observing this beautiful melodic form, Acharya Tanarang has renamed it as Raag Sundarkauns and also composed lots of Bandishen. In this Raag, Dhaivat is also a resting note along with Madhyam and Shadj. Being a straight forward Raag, it can be expanded freely in all the three octaves. Because of Shuddha Dhaivat, the atmosphere created by this Raag is less deep then Malkauns.
